Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Tier List (2025)
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has taken the gaming world by storm since its release, quickly establishing itself as one of 2025’s standout RPG titles. Its innovative twist on turn-based combat has drawn in not only genre veterans, but also players who typically shy away from turn-based systems.
As you prepare to journey across The Continent, one of the most important decisions you’ll make is which characters earn a spot in your limited three-member active party. A well-built team can trivialize tough encounters, while a poor composition can make even normal fights feel punishing.
Each character in Clair Obscur offers a unique playstyle, set of mechanics, and narrative role. Some stay with you for the long haul, while others depart before fully reaching their potential. This tier list breaks down every playable character, analyzing their strengths, weaknesses, and overall value to help you make informed party decisions.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – Character Tier List

6. Gustave (Bottom Tier)
Despite being the game’s initial protagonist, Gustave unfortunately ranks last on our tier list. His low placement isn’t due to lack of power, but rather his limited screen time and long-term viability.
Gustave’s gameplay revolves around building his Overcharge bar, then unleashing devastating attacks once it’s full. You can charge Overcharge through:
Standard attacks
Successful dodges and parries
Perfect chains of Lumière Assault (the most efficient method)
In the early game, Gustave is extremely reliable thanks to his straightforward mechanics and strong burst damage. However, his role is eventually transferred to Verso, cutting short his growth and preventing him from competing with more permanent party members.
Verdict: Strong early-game carry, but lacks long-term relevance.

5. Monoco
Monoco is the only playable Gestral character and brings a fascinating concept that sadly falls short in execution.
He joins late in the game and requires heavy investment to unlock his full potential. His signature ability—shapeshifting into Nevrons—only unlocks after defeating enemies with specific symbols while Monoco is in the active party. This already demanding condition is further complicated by the fact that he joins at a lower level than your existing team, forcing additional grinding.
His Bestial Wheel mechanic adds another layer of complexity, requiring precise AP management and careful timing to align buffs with abilities.
Verdict: Creative and unique, but too demanding and too late to justify a main party slot.

4. Lune
Lune represents a solid mid-tier option, offering consistent support with respectable damage potential throughout much of the game.
She functions as a reliable main support while still contributing offensively—especially when frequently triggering her Mayhem skill. However, her Elemental Stains mechanic holds her back. Generating Stains requires careful sequencing of abilities, making her damage setup slower and more complex than other characters.
Additionally, her support duties often consume turns that could otherwise be spent preparing damage.
Verdict: Dependable, versatile, and present for much of the story, but mechanically demanding and slower to scale.

3. Maelle
Despite being the youngest party member, Maelle earns her high-tier ranking thanks to her exceptional DPS potential and engaging combat mechanics.
Her gameplay centers around a Stance system, allowing her to shift between offensive, defensive, or balanced modes. These stances dramatically alter her skills and reward mastery with devastating results.
Maelle is one of the best characters in the game for applying Burn, making her extremely effective in both mob fights and boss encounters.
Her main drawbacks:
Minimal team support
Requires careful stance management, especially in dynamic fights
Verdict: A top-tier damage dealer who shines in skilled hands, but offers little utility outside offense.

2. Verso
Taking the crown as the strongest character in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Verso eventually replaces Gustave as the protagonist—and functions as a superior evolution of his playstyle.
Verso introduces the Perfection mechanic, ranking his performance from D to S. Higher ranks dramatically boost his combat effectiveness, but maintaining them requires precision:
Missed dodges or parries lower your rank
Clean execution steadily raises it
In prolonged battles, Verso truly shines. Once he reaches higher Perfection ranks, he becomes an unstoppable force capable of dominating nearly any encounter.
Verdict: Versatile, powerful, and rewarding. The best all-around character in the game.

1. Sciel (Top Tier)
Just missing the top spot, Sciel offers some of the most game-breaking potential in Clair Obscur—if you can master her systems.
Her core mechanic, Foretell, allows her to apply special “cards” to enemies (up to 10 by default). Some abilities:
Apply Foretell (Sun Charge)
Consume Foretell (Moon Charge)
When both are combined effectively, Sciel enters Twilight, increasing the Foretell cap to 20 per enemy and massively boosting damage output.
Beyond raw damage, Sciel also provides powerful buffs, making her both a DPS and support hybrid.
Verdict: Extremely powerful with a high skill ceiling. Devastating when mastered, but demanding to play optimally.
